Conversation Class – Italian Women In Italian Cinema – Low Intermediate Through Advanced Levels – Evening Class

Material: We will choose widely available movies via Netflix, YouTube, Amazon, etc. As you will be watching on your own, you will need to have access to some of these platforms.
Location: Taught online via Zoom. An invitation and explanations on how to join the meeting will be sent to registered students.

Learning Italian with Italian-language originals is a great way to retain vocabulary and grammar, get used to various accents and forms of speech, as well as learn about Italian culture and lifestyle.

The goal of this conversation class is threefold:

• to give you an opportunity to learn about the evolution of Italian society in the 20^th and 21^st centuries;
• to help you become more versed in Italian cinema;
• to work on and improve your conversational skills.

Through a careful selection of Italian films, you will learn and discuss how women’s lives evolved in Italy in the 20^th and 21^st centuries.

Significantly shaped by the historical events of the first part of the 20^th century, the experiences of Italian women of that era paved the way for greater gender equality in the years that ensued; but traditional gender roles and expectations did not easily give way to today’s new generations of highly educated women present in all aspects of modern Italian society.

This course offers to use Italian cinema to navigate the ebb and flows of this evolution.

Each week, you will be assigned a movie to watch at home and asked to prepare to discuss it in class. The movies we choose will be widely available on common platforms (Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, etc.) to make it easy for everyone to access. We will recommend techniques to help you improve your Italian, grow your vocabulary, and perfect your accent as you watch these movies.

You have been studying Italian for some time and are comfortable carrying on conversations on a large variety of topics? This class is another fun and enriching way to learn!
