The corrido is a 150‐year-old Mexican ballad tradition that narrates tragic tales based on true events and honors folk heroes. World Music Day - "Language Social" with Oud Music

World Music Day or La fête de la musique as it is known in my native France is celebrated with free impromptu “concerts” all over the country on June 21st – a Thursday night this year -- and has been since the early 80’s at the initiative of then Minister of Culture, Jack Lang.
As we normally hold classes on Thursday, we will celebrate that occasion on Friday the 22
nd with a musician from Iraq, Jawad Alfatlawi. Jawad is a refugee from Iraq who has been in Portland about 2 1/2 years. He is a master oud player, having begun its study in his early teens. He was a professor of music for many years before leaving Iraq. He also is a talented luthier and has made all the instruments that he plays.
Please join us for camaraderie, snacks and refreshments, and the enchanting music of this lovely instrument all the while practicing your language skills (any language) if you wish to!

: The Language Exchange, 75 Market Street #305
Date/time: Friday June 22 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm
Cost: Free of charge

 World Music Day

We moved!

As of January 2018, the school is now located at 75 Market Street in Portland.

The last two months of 2017 were a bit hectic as we looked for a perfect new place we could call home.

Our former building was sold and is undergoing a major transformation. We thought it was important not to worry you about the impending change of address as we understand very few people truly enjoy "change" even when it turns out to be for the best…

We wanted to stay in the Old Port where many of you work and enjoy life and of course, your language classes! The Old Port has been our place of business for 20 of our 26 years in business and it did not feel right to leave this wonderful part of town.

We looked for a place that would allow us to continue to offer you all that you have grown accustomed to, but also to grow to include more programs you will enjoy.

After several attempts at securing a new space for January, we finally signed a lease on December 29th and proceeded with the move!

Our new address at 75 Market Street – Suite 305 (3rd floor) – Portland, 04101 is located just on the other side of the “Post Office Park” that lies between Exchange, Middle, and Market Streets. That is what we could literally call being “a stone’s throw” away from our former location!

It is a beautiful building, well cared for, with a large lobby area, 2 staircases (50 steps, just what the doctor ordered), as well as 2 elevators (should you really need them).

Our neighbors at the street level are Portland Hunt & Alpine Club (restaurant) and Ramblers Way (clothing store). This will make it easy to find. The building entrance is on Market Street and the building is at the corner of Market and Middle Street.

We hope you have already had time to visit or come to class and if you haven't, we look forward to seeing you soon!
